The Miami Marlins have agreed to new salaries with Brian Anderson, Jorge Alfaro, Yimi Garcia, Newly acquired Adam Cimber, and Richard Bleier. This is the second time they have avoided arbitration hearings under the new ownership.
The biggest one that concerned Miami fans was 3B Brian Anderson. Anderson was the first one to agree as his new salary is worth $3.8M dollars. Anderson, 27, came off a decent 60-game season as he was one of the few Marlins to stay healthy all season. He had a line of .255/.345/.465 as well as 11 home runs and 38 RBI’s. Fans want to see the Marlins extend Anderson, and with this new one year deal, Anderson can continue to show why he deserves to be paid more.
Another highly anticipated player to reach a new salary was Catcher Jorge Alfaro. Alfaro agreed to a one year, $2.05M dollar deal. Jorge Alfaro, 27, was one of the many Marlins to contract the coronavirus during the shortened 60 game season. Alfaro did not have the bounce back he wanted, but maintained a line of .226/.280/.344. As the Marlins are interested in Wilson Contreras, Jorge Alfaro is one of the names that could appear in a possible trade scenario. If Miami does not pursue Contreras, Alfaro will remain the everyday starting catcher.
The second Marlin to agree to a new salary was RHP Yimi Garcia. The settled deal is set at $1.9M dollars. Garcia, 30, had a very solid season out of the pen for Miami. In 14 games, he pitched 15 innings, accumulated an ERA of .60, a K% of 31.7%, and a BB% of 8.3%. Keeping Yimi Garcia is big for the Miami bullpen, which is not the greatest at times.
The last two Miami players to agree were RHP Adam Cimber and LHP Richard Bleier. The amount of money has yet to be stated, but keeping these two men in the pen is also big for Miami. At the end of November, the Marlins acquired Adam Cimber from the Indians for cash considerations. Cimber is one of the few submarine pitchers left in the league. Cimber played in 14 games last season for the Indians where he accumulated an ERA just under 4.00. The Marlins also acquired Richard Bleier on July 31, 2021, from the Baltimore Orioles. Between Miami and Baltimore, Bleier had a decent season out of the pen, appearing in 21 games and accumulating an ERA of 2.16.
Agreeing to new salaries with all five players is huge, as the Marlins now do not have to take any of these cases to the arb court in February. Now, Marlins fans can only hope that the front office makes a big trade or signs some free agents to keep things interesting.
