The Los Angeles Chargers selected Oregon QB Justin Herbert with their first pick in the draft (sixth overall). The pick came with mixed reactions with some fans loving the pick, others hating it, and some fans who thought the Chargers should have taken Simmons, which includes me. Today, we will be taking a look at the pros and cons of Herbert’s play.
The pros
Herbert comes in at 6’6 and 237 pounds. A perfect stature for a QB. He has an absolute cannon and can easily sling it downfield. He can stand in the pocket and throw a ball on the dime. Accuracy is average most of the time and injuries shouldn’t be too much of a problem. He can also use his legs we need be which is an underrated aspect of his game.
The Cons
Justin’s accuracy was a huge issue entering the 2020 draft. His accuracy is extremely inconsistent and will throw a dime on one play, then overthrow his target the next. Mechanics in his throwing motion and footwork have a lot to do with it. Although this will take some work I think this is fixable but if not treated he will get picked apart in the NFL. Another small issue is his weight. I don’t think this affects him too much but something to note.
Pro Comparison
My pro comparison for Herbert has to be Josh Allen. They have similar statures and both have cannons. They also both had the same issues coming out of college which was accuracy. Allen up to this point has been great so that adds some hope to Herbert’s potential.
My Thoughts
My thoughts on Herbert are mixed. I think he has a lot of upsides but also has a lot of downsides as well. He will a lot of coaching and the right coaching but if he has those things he can turn into a star. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do but we’ll likely have to wait as Tyrod Taylor is likely to start in 2020. Whatever the case maybe it’ll be interesting to see how good Herbert will turn out to be…
