Vidal Brujan is a switch-hitting second baseman from San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. He signed as a free agent with the Rays in 2014 when he was only 16 years old. He officially made his debut in the Rays’ organization in 2015 when he played in the Dominican Summer League, the Rays’ Foreign Rookie League. He had a solid start to his career as he walked more than twice as much as he struck out in 60 games. He also had an impressive .401 OBP and stole 22 bases. Brujan started his 2016 season with the Gulf Coast League (GCL) Rays. The GCL Rays are one of the Rays’ Rookie League teams. He had a respectable year with the club hitting .282 with only 15 strikeouts. The power numbers were still very low as he only tallied 3 HRs in his first 2 seasons. Nevertheless, the Rays saw great potential in Brujan’s ability and he got promoted to Low Single-A at the end of the 2016 season.
Vidal Brujan has stormed through the Rays’ farm system ever since as he hasn’t stayed with one club for more than a season. He has contributed greatly to each team he’s played for as he has hit .294 for his minor league career so far. His power numbers have also started to come around as he smashed 9 HRs in 2018. The tool that makes Brujan stand out though is his blazing speed. He stole an absurd 55 bases in 122 games in 2018 and another 48 bases the next year. Vidal’s ability to swipe bases at will can be deadly at the big league level and I believe that is why the Rays’ front office loves him so much.
Brujan is currently playing for the Montgomery Biscuits, Double-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. He also got a non-roster invite to this year’s shortened Spring Training. He hit a dismal .118 in only 17 at-bats, but I’m still very excited to see how this kid progresses in the next few years. I could see him becoming a member of the big league club in only 3-4 years.
