2017 Redraft
Hello everyone. I am @bostonchipcity.territory and I will be doing a 2017 NBA redraft. I’m going to look back at the careers of players drafted in 2017 and redraft them as if teams could see and go back in time.
1 – PHI – Jayson Tatum – original: 3rd BOS
Tatum has exploded this year, exceeding all expectations. Averaging over 23.5 points per game and just under 30 after the all-star break, Tatum has shown he can lead the Celtics to wins down the stretch.
2 – LAL – Donovan Mitchell – original: 13th DEN
Donovan has been a star in Utah ever since he got drafted. This year, he is averaging 24, 4, and 4, leading the Jazz to the 4th seed in the west. Tatum beats him out for number 1 because Tatum has shown more leadership along with clutch scoring and the ability to score.
3 – BOS – De’Aaron Fox – original: 5th SAC
The speedy guard has had a big impact on the Sacramento Kings, scoring just over 20 points a game along with almost 7 assists and 1.4 steals. He has shown he can be very productive with his quickness, defense, and playmaking in the NBA.
4 – PHO – Bam Adebayo – original: 14th MIA
Bam is having a breakout season this year with the Heat. He has proven he has the potential to grow into a star in the NBA. He is a very balanced player, excelling on both offense and defense, as well as a potential candidate for MIP.
5 – SAC – John Collins – original: 19th ATL
John Collins has proven to be a solid player, averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds a game this year. He can be productive on both sides, and is shooting over 40% from behind the arc. He is above guys like Lonzo because of his ability to score and rebound with ease.
6 – ORL – Lonzo Ball – original: 2nd LAL
Although Lonzo had a rough time with the Lakers, he is showing signs of a superstar in New Orleans. He has overcame his dad’s big personality and is averaging 12, 7, and 6. Ball and Zion Williamson are looking like a scary duo for many years to come.
7 – MIN – Jarrett Allen – original: 22nd BKN
Jarrett hasn’t had a huge impact in his career so far, but he has been a good role player for the Nets. This year he is averaging 10 and 9, on the way to the 7th seed for Brooklyn.
8 – NYK – OG Anunoby – original: 23rd TOR
OG has had a very solid career so far with the Raptors. This year he is averaging 10, 5, and 1, while shooting over 50%. He helped the Raptors win a championship in his second year.
9 – DAL – Kyle Kuzma – original: 27 BKN
Kuzma has declined quite a bit from last year. Last year he averaged 18 PPG compared to 12.4 this year. He has also had dips in 3 point percentage, field goal percentage, assists per game, and rebounds per game. I put him here because he has more potential in my opinion than the guys below him.
10 – SAC – Lauri Markenen – original: 7th MIN
Lauri is another player who has declined is his third year. He has had significant drops in many of the main stat categories. So far, his career has also been injury riddled. If he can prove to stay healthy and make improvements, he will be much higher on this list in a few years.
11 – CHO – Dennis Smith Jr. – original: 9th DAL
DSJ has shown a lot of potential. However, being on the Knicks is limiting his performance. With a different team, he could turn his career around. He has shown great potential with the Mavs and Knicks. I didn’t put him higher because of all of his injury setbacks.
12 – DET – Josh Jackson – original: 4th PHX
Josh has had a decent showing in his first 3 years. He spent the first 2 with the Suns, and is now playing for the Grizzlies. In my opinion these 2 seasons helped him a great deal. He is averaging 10 points, 3 rebound, and almost 2 assists a game, along with 1 steal.
13 – DEN – Luke Kennard – original: 12th DET
Luke has exploded this year, averaging almost 16 points, 4 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game. He has been a solid piece of a terrible Pistons team. This has hurt him as a whole, but probably gave him some more experience. He is not picked higher because he has had very mediocre first 2 seasons in the NBA and I see him with a little bit less potential than guys like Kyle Kuzma and Josh Jackson. If he was originally drafted by the Nuggets, I can see him being higher on this list, as he would mesh well with Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic.
14 – MIA – Markelle Fultz – original: 1st PHI
Markelle had a very rough first 2 years in Philadelphia. Since his injury and being traded to the Magic, he has recovered from that well. He has shown improvements in pretty much every statistical category, including an almost 4 point per game and .200 free throw percentage jump.
15 – POR – Malik Monk – original: 11th CHO
Malik is averaging 10, 2, and 2 this year. He is shooting 43 percent from the field and 28 percent from 3. Although his stats aren’t the best, he has shown a lot of potential. I believe he can become a very good player in his career.
