The Cavaliers did not have high expectations going into this season; however, they are in the middle of an ugly season that seems to have little to no bright spots. It all started when they hired former Michigan Head Coach Jim Beilein to become their next head coach. When I first heard of the news, I was surprised and thought it was a bad hire. While Beilein had managed to bring his team deep into March Madness several times, he never gained any consistency on a season-to-season level. While teams need star-power to win games, those teams also need a coach who can develop their players into a better cohesive unit. Beilein struggled to do this at Michigan and has failed to do this in Cleveland. Not only was this a bad hire, but Michigan is playing phenomenal basketball this season, ranking as high as the fourth-best team in the country at one point. Beilein also recently called his players “thugs” in a team practice when he meant to say “slugs”, which caused a mini-divide between the players. Another gloomy area is the drama surrounding Kevin Love. Since the departure of LeBron James, Kevin Love has been stuck on a team rebuilding and is playing a veteran-role and is not be valued properly. There have been numerous outbursts by Love this season, whether he is being visibly upset on the bench or lashing out his anger on the court. Love has been on the trading block since day one of this season, but the Cavaliers will not pull the trigger on a deal. They are overvaluing him when trading, and Beilein is underappreciating his worth on the court. The Cavaliers are in a state of misery since the departure of LeBron James, and this franchise looks like it is headed straight down south.
