Or is it?

According to the NFLTR, the Dolphins have the fourth highest cap space in the league at  $28,669,616. This even after spending big bucks on players like Byron Jones, Kyle Van Noy, and even a few of their rookies including  QB Tua Tagovailoa who just signed his 4 year $30 million deal which includes a 5th year option.

The Dolphins just have four rookies to sign, two of them being first round picks in Austin Jackson and Noah Igbinoghene. The Dolphins’ total pool of funds needed to sign their 2020 draft class is $17,517,278, but less than $14 million will be needed in cap space because only the top-51 salaries on the team’s 90-player training camp roster counts against the salary cap.

So should Chris Grier and co spend some of that extra money on any remaining free agents? The Dolphins are reportedly interested in two players, Cornerback Logan Ryan, and IOL Larry Warford.

It is being reported that Wraford is asking for 7 million dollars annually. Warford, 28, has made the pro bowl three times in the last three years only gave up two sacks in the 2019 regular season and one in the postseason. He fits Chan Gailey’s spread offense perfectly and could be a good mentor for rookies Robert Hut, Soloman Kindley, and Austin Jackson.

Logan Ryan, 29, has played for flores before in New England and recently in Tennessee. Even with having two of the highest paid corners in the league and drafting corner Noah Igbonogonhe in the first round, Chris Grier seems interested in Logan Ryan. Ryan wants close to the $9.5 million he made last season for 2020, which may be unrealistic at this point in free agency.

Warford makes too much sense while Ryan is a bit of a head scratcher, however is familiar with Coach Flores.

Why Josh Rosen Deserves A Chance https://field2court.com/2020/05/11/why-josh-rosen-deserves-a-chance/ https://field2court.com/2020/05/11/why-josh-rosen-deserves-a-chance/#respond Mon, 11 May 2020 05:11:42 +0000 https://field2court.com/?p=7760 People think Rosen suck. I personally think that the Dolphins should of drafted OLine with the first pick, and then go with a skills position player or even another OLine position with the second selection they had in the 1st round. I wanted the Dolphins to build AROUND Rosen. This is why I feel Rosen deserves a 2nd chance

Rosen was drafted to the Arizona Cardinals with the 10th selection in the NFL Draft. Coming into a god awful Cardinals team with NO OLINE and No real talent, which you could say Larry Fitz and Christian Kirk fit that mold but Fitz, was servicable with 700 yards and 6 TDs, and Kirk, a rookie Wideout. Rosen couldn’t do anything with what the Cardinals gave him because of the team around him. But again Rosen had some cons of course which was his fault, which is throwing to late. Rosen makes the right read, but he does it to late. He could have a route underneath wide open, he does recognize it but its to late as he throws it incomplete or a very short gain that could’ve been 8-9 yards.

After his rookie season the Cardinals looked to move past Wilks and hired Kliff Kingsbury, who said he WOULD rock with Rosen as his QB, but all was a lie as more rumors came out he had intentions to draft Kyler Murray with the first pick, as he did. And shipped Rosen out night 2 of the draft to the Dolphins.

Rosens time in Arizona, 11 Touchdowns 15 INTs and a 55 Completion Rate, but he was sacked 45 times. Going 3-13 with the Cardinals.

Rosen to Miami led to Rosen dealing with the same thing he dealt with in Arizona, a 1st year coach, again playing behind the worse OLine in the league, with no real supporting cast, but this time we kind of knew that the Dolphins were going to land Tua. Rosen over 3 games went 1:5 and just over 500 yards, but in 3 games sacked 16 times. After that they benched him for Ryan Fitzpatrick for the season.

Many could write Rosen as a bust but he is the younger QB at 23. But giving his cast, look at the talent he has or had in his career, all Rosen needs is a chance. A functional Front Office, a actual cast around him, take the Steelers for example. He could go in there and be Big Ben’s replacement soon. A good OLine led by Pouncy, serviceable Wideouts and TE’s, a great Defense led by TJ Watt, and working 1 on 1 with Tomlin. He will develop, for the first time in his career

Josh Rosen will be a great QB, with a chance.

With Tua on board, what’s next for Josh Rosen? https://field2court.com/2020/05/09/with-tua-on-board-whats-next-for-josh-rosen/ https://field2court.com/2020/05/09/with-tua-on-board-whats-next-for-josh-rosen/#respond Sun, 10 May 2020 03:34:16 +0000 https://field2court.com/?p=7647 It was former Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson who said: “The most important player on the team is the starting quarterback. The second most important player is the backup quarterback.”

With Tagovailoa on board, I’d say the third most important Dolphins player is the backup to the backup. Look, Brian Flores did not shed any light when or whether Tagovailoa, who continues to recover from his November hip injury, will play this season.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is entering his last season on the two year contract he signed last offseason. He is set to make $8. Meanwhile, Josh Rosen is owed $2,070,769 in 2020 and $2,879,694 in 2021, which are both fully guaranteed, making him a relatively cheap option as a starting or backup quarterback by NFL measures.

If Tagovailoa plays, Fitzpatrick will likely be Miami’s first backup in line, followed by Rosen.

If Tagovailoa is essentially redshirted, Fitzpatrick gets the nod over Rosen – unless Rosen can beat Fitzpatrick out in practice.

But what happens after this year? You could give Rosen some playing time this season to stock up some trade value, you could cut him, or you could keep him as a backup for Tua.

The reality? Rosen will most likely stay as the team’s backup QB. He is young and in his first two years, he has shown flashes of greatness in a poor supporting cast.

Dolphins fans should be excited Miami has both depth and competition at the quarterback position.

Don Shula Passes Away https://field2court.com/2020/05/04/don-shula-passes-away/ https://field2court.com/2020/05/04/don-shula-passes-away/#respond Mon, 04 May 2020 16:11:54 +0000 https://field2court.com/?p=7310 Hall of Fame Head Coach Don Shula has passed away at the age of 90, according to the Miami Dolphins.

Shula spent several years in the NFL as a player for the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Colts, and Washington Redskins. He also coached for the Colts but is best known for a 25-year long tenure with the Miami Dolphins.

“Don Shula was the patriarch of the Miami Dolphins for 50 years,” the team said in a statement. “He brought the winning edge to our franchise and put the Dolphins and the city of Miami in the national sports scene.”

200504-don-shula-miami-dolphins-obit-se-1043a_4c407c221cd1ef7a2d4773819fd4fbff.fit-760w

Shula’s Dolphins won back-to-back Super Bowls in the 1970s. In 1972, his Phins did what no team has yet to do again: engineer a perfect season.

Shula’s 348 wins stand alone at the top of the record books. George Halas and Bill Belichick are the only other members of the prestigious 300-win club alongside Shula.

Shula was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1997 and dipped his toes into the Hollywood pool, appearing in a cameo role in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

He will be missed.

Redoing Top Ten Picks of NFL Draft: Part 2 (2012) https://field2court.com/2020/05/04/redoing-top-ten-picks-of-nfl-draft-part-2-2012/ https://field2court.com/2020/05/04/redoing-top-ten-picks-of-nfl-draft-part-2-2012/#respond Mon, 04 May 2020 15:18:05 +0000 https://field2court.com/?p=7034 Despite this article being published after the NFL Draft, let’s stay in draft spirit by redoing the top ten picks of the 2012 NFL Draft.

As a reminder, all trades made on draft night within the top ten selections will still be included. The 2012 was loaded with quality quarterbacks, while also fielding some of today’s NFL defensive superstars.

This was extremely difficult, as the amount of defensive talent in this draft is incomparable to any other, so here are a few honorable mentions to this draft list just to show you how deep this draft went: Fletcher Cox, Josh Norman, Dont’a Hightower, Melvin Ingram, Whitney Mercilus, and Janoris Jenkins.

That is right, all those top-tier defensive players did not make the top ten. That just shows how stacked this class was.

The 2012 NFL Re-Draft is open, and the Colts are on the clock.

1: Indianapolis Colts: Russell Wilson, QB

Easily the top quarterback in this class. I like the original pick with Andrew Luck, but Luck’s retirement pushes Wilson to the top slot. Unlike in Seattle, Wilson will be able to have a strong run game, and have protection, thus making him more dominant than ever.

2: Washington Redskins: Luke Keuchly, LB

While they originally went with RGIII, I believe they should have gone elsewhere. While Luke Keuchly might have retired this offseason, he is still the best defensive player in this class. The Redskins defense has been lacking for many years now, but this all changes when they get Keuchly.

3: Cleveland Browns: Bobby Wagner, LB

Bobby Wagner might have the closest skillset to Keuchly not just in this class, but in the NFL as a whole. Wagner is a tackle machine, and this pick would be a complete reversal in impact on the team compared to Trent Richardson. Wagner would become a fan-favorite in Cleveland, and potentially even lead them to success.

4: Minnesota Vikings: David Decastro, OG

The Vikings went offensive line in the original draft, so I decided to stick with the same position despite there being better talent still left on the board. DeCastro is a great lineman who was rock-solid guarding Big Ben. Kirk Cousins will be lucky to have a strong line revolving around this guy.

5: Jacksonville Jaguars: T.Y. Hilton, WR

They went with J. Blackmon with the original pick. I like keeping the picks in the same position, so the Jaguars in this redraft will select the top wide receiver from this class T.Y. Hilton. If only he had a good quarterback to throw to him.

6: Dallas Cowboys: Stephon Gilmore, CB

Gilmore is easily the top cornerback in this class, and is potentially the best cornerback in the league. Gilmore solidifies the Cowboys’ secondary, which would be a better pick than Morris Claiborne.

7: Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Harrison Smith, SS

The hard hitting safety is just what the Buccaneers need. Smith has dominated the competition, and his power is no match to anyone else. Smith could have been the next Ronde Barber, but instead, he is dominating on the Vikings.

8: Miami Dolphins: Chandler Jones, DE

The Dolphins get a great pass rusher in Chandler Jones. In Arizona, he and Patrick Peterson were able to lead a very solid defensive unit. The Dolphins have many holes, but they cover a big one with Jones.

9: Carolina Panthers: Lavonte David, LB

With Keuchley off the board in this redraft, the Panthers need to take the next best available linebacker. David may not be Luke Keuchly, but David’s versatility and IQ make him worthy of being selected at the ninth slot.

10: Buffalo Bills: Casey Heyward, CB

The Bills originally went with Gilmore here, so they now need to find a different cornerback to select. While Josh Norman and Janoris Jenkins are great players, I believe that Casey Heyward would fit in well in Buffalo.

2020 7 ROUND DOLPHINS MOCK DRAFT https://field2court.com/2020/04/23/2020-7-round-dolphins-mock-draft/ https://field2court.com/2020/04/23/2020-7-round-dolphins-mock-draft/#respond Thu, 23 Apr 2020 21:35:48 +0000 https://field2court.com/?p=6920 It’s finally draft day Fins fans. The biggest draft in Miami Dolphins history will take place tonight at 8 PM ET. Now let’s dive into the picks.

Trades: Lions receive pick 5 pick 56 Pick

              Dolphins receive pick 3

              Browns receive pick 18 pick 141 2021 2nd

              Dolphins receive pick 10

Round 1 pick 3: Tua Tagovailoa, QB

There have been tons of rumors swirling around this week but I think Chris Grier has had his eyes set on Tua for the past 2 years. The Dolphins also reportedly passed his physical.

Round 1 Pick 10: Jedrick willis, OT

The Dolphins passed on signing an OT in free agency. I expect them to take one early this draft. However, I don’t expect Chris Grier to sit back and settle with Josh Jones or Austin Jackson. Pairing Tua and Willis would be a great first round already.

Round 1 pick 26: Caesar Ruiz, IOL

The Dolphins signed Ereck Flowers and have a 2nd year returner in Michael Dieter on the oline. The Dolphins got their starting RT earlier and now they get their potential center/guard that will compete with Ted Karras.

Round 2 pick 39: J.K. Dobbins, RB

The Dolphins have interest in all of the top 5 RBS. Dobbins at 39 is an amazing value and you pair him up with Jordan Howard you got a great duo.

Round 3 pick 70: Ashtyn Davis, S

Davis can do it all back there. He has tremendous speed and strength. Pairing him with his DB coach from college in Miami would be amazing. In this case, Bobby McCain would move back to the nickel which is what he is best at.

Round 5 pick 153: Lynn Bowden, WR

I said he was a WR but is he? Bowden is a Taysom Hill-like player. I think he will mostly play slot WR but he has experience at QB,RB, and KR/PR. He is the type of player Brian Flores wants. Versatile and has that ‘X’ factor.

Round 5 pick 154: Leki Fotu, DT

The Dolphins drafted Christain Wilkins last year and have Davon Guadchaux who is still very young and has shown lots of potential. Wilkins, Fotu, and goudchaux along with Ogbah moving between DT and edge would be a very good  versatile rotation for Brian Flores’s defense.

Round 5 pick 173: Darnay Holmes, CB

I expect the Dolphins to draft a CB in the later rounds. Holmes would be a good addition to an already beefed up secondary.

Round 6 pick 185: KJ Hill, WR

Will Hill be here this late in the draft? Probably not. But with a stacked WR class it could happen. Hill would make the roster and battle for some playing time in the slot. This pick would be great value and would give the WR room some competition.

Round 7 pick 227: James Morgan, QB

You may be asking, why another QB? To add more competition of course. A QB room of Fitz to mentor young Josh Rosen, Tua Tagovailoa, and James Morgan could be something to watch. Morgan is the biggest sleeper QB in the draft.

Round 7 pick pick 246: Colton Mckivitz, OT

The Dolphins add more depth here for the O-line. Colton could potentially develop into a starter in the future. He has 4 years of experience at West Virginia.

Round 7 pick 251: Charlie Taumoepeau, TE

Mike Gesicki is developing into one of the better receiving TEs in the league. However, blocking is an issue for him. Taumoepeau would compete with Durhyme Smythe to make the roster or even to be TE # 2.

This draft should be exciting!

Redoing Top Ten Picks of NFL Drafts: Part 1 (2017) https://field2court.com/2020/04/22/redoing-top-ten-picks-of-nfl-drafts-part-1-2017/ https://field2court.com/2020/04/22/redoing-top-ten-picks-of-nfl-drafts-part-1-2017/#respond Wed, 22 Apr 2020 21:00:32 +0000 https://field2court.com/?p=6753 As we look upon tomorrow’s draft, let us look upon one of the best draft classes in modern era.

The 2017 NFL Draft was loaded with superstars ranging in all positions. This draft class included offensive superstars such as Christian Mcafferey, George Kittle, and Chris Godwin; but, also includes defensive pro-bowlers in Jamal Adams, Myles Garrett, and Tre’Davious White.

This re-draft will include all draft day trades. Plus, not all selections were based on skill: it depends on replicability at the position. For example, if this re-draft was purely based on skill, then close to half of the top ten picks would have been a runningback.

Now that the perameters have been set, let us re-draft:

1: Cleveland Browns: Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech

Patrick Mahomes, pictured above after winning Super Bowl LIV.

After being benched behind Alex Smith in his rookie season, Patrick Mahomes has played two star seasons for the Kansas City Chiefs. In this timespan, Mahomes has won the NFL’s MVP award, and most recently a Super Bowl victory, to name a few of Mahomes’ many achievements. The Chiefs made what will eventually be considered as the best move in their franchise’s history by trading to the 10th pick for Mahomes, nabbing the best player in the NFL. However, in this re-draft, the Browns decide to pick Mahomes instead of star defensive end Myles Garrett.

2: Chicago Bears: Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M

While Garrett’s season was cut short due to his incident involving Mason Rudolph in a regular season game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, let that not undercut Garrett’s talent. Garrett was more than well-deserving of the first-overall pick, but having the generational talent in Mahomes forces Garrett to move down a spot. The only reason I do not have Deshaun Watson landing here is because I think the Bears stick with Mike Glennon after signing him to a ridiculously large deal that offseason.

3: San Fransisco 49ers: George Kittle, TE, Iowa

While we all like to think of the Niners defense as formidable, it was not thanks to the likes of Soloman Thomas. But, that does not mean the Niners did this draft wrong, as they selected George Kittle in the fifth round. In this redraft, the Niners decide to select Kittle with their first round pick, and wait until the later rounds before even considering Thomas. Kittle has been an unstoppable force ever since being drafted into the league. At this point in time, the Niners have many holes, including quarterback, but they wait to get a quarterback until trading for Jimmy Garropolo. Kittle provides their team a dynamic blocker as well as a receiving threat that will scare defenses for weeks to come.

4: Jacksonville Jaguars: Christian Mccaffrey, HB, Stanford

The Jaguars initially selected Leanard Fournette at this spot. While I think this was a great fit, I believe that the Jaguars could have gone with a better running back. With uncertainty with Blake Bortles at quarterback, Mccaffrey will be playing in a nearly identical situation to the one he is currently in with the Panthers. Overall, CMC is a much better fit with this squad then Fournette is.

5: Tennessee Titans: T.J. Watt, EDGE, Wisconsin

Watt has improved in every season he has played, and has become a Defensive Player of the Year candidate with the Steelers. The Titans went with Corey Davis with this pick, which proved to be bust-worthy, especially now that they have a run-dominated offense with Derrick Henry. The Titans in this redraft go with defense, deciding between Jamal Adams and Watt. They eventually go with Watt, showing that they are confident in their safety group that is lead by Kevin Byard.

6: New York Jets: Jamal Adams, S, LSU

It is not often that in a redraft, a team goes with the same guy they went with in the actual draft. Even though there is uncertainty in his future with the Jets this offseason, the smart move is to keep their pick with Adams going at 6.

7: Los Angeles Chargers: Chris Godwin, WR, Penn State

While this may seem as a surprise to many, I think that the Chargers picking Godwin would be perfect. They initially went with Mike Williams, who they had hoped would provide Philip Rivers with a solid WR2 option. This would have spread the field more, allowing their star WR Keenan Allen and TE Hunter Henry to have more open space, creating more big plays. Williams has been a good pick, posting solid numbers when healthy. But, in comparison to Godwin’s breakout season, Williams stands no match. Chargers stick with a wideout here.

8: Carolina Panthers: Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama

Ever since the departure of Josh Norman and the rest of the core 15-1 Panther squad, the defense has been lacking in overall talent in exception to newly retired LB Luke Kuechly. This class features many great cornerbacks, including Tre’Davious White, and Marshon Lattimore. But, I am going with Humphrey. Since 2017, Humphrey has been hawking every pass thrown to him down, breaking up 47 passes, ranking fourth since he was drafted into the league.

9: Cincinnati Bengals: Tre’Davious White, CB, LSU

Like I mentioned in the previous selection, this class is loaded with studs at cornerback. The Bengals in the actual draft went with John Ross, going for a speedy wideout to be opposite to AJ Green. Ross has been plagued with injuries, making him not worthy of this selection. The Bengals secondary has been abysmal at best, so they take Pro-Bowl cornerback White at this pick. However, this Bengals team is still far from where they have to be, and even with the selection of White, I would still see the Bengals winding up with the first pick in tomorrow’s draft.

10: Kansas City Chiefs: Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson

Those that are reading this, I know you are confused. The Chiefs trading to this pick for the fundamental purpose of drafting Patrick Mahomes. That is true. But, they still believe that they have their guy in Watson. While Watson might not be at the same level as Mahomes, Watson would play perfect to this speedy team. Andy Reid would style a playbook that would revolve lots of play-action, screens to both running backs and wide receivers, and QB runs, similar to the current Chiefs playbook. In my mind, this would be a no-brainer trade the Chiefs make to pick Watson.

5 Quarterbacks the Dolphins should look at before the draft. https://field2court.com/2020/02/03/5-quarterbacks-the-dolphins-should-look-at-before-the-draft/ https://field2court.com/2020/02/03/5-quarterbacks-the-dolphins-should-look-at-before-the-draft/#respond Mon, 03 Feb 2020 23:59:04 +0000 http://dolphins_qbs Joe Burrow- Burrow is most likely going to be a Bengal yes, but that doesn’t mean Miami should not take a look at him. Burrow is the top QB in the class and has shown he can do everything. Burrow led the nation with 55 touchdowns and a 77.6 completion percentage, and was second with 5,208 passing yards, leading LSU to the national title game.

Tua Tagovailoa- With all the rumors swirling right now it appears that Tua is likely to be a Dolphin in April. However, Tua has been plagued with injuries. Most recently, he had a gruesome hip injury. The skill is still there but the scouting and medical department will need to take a look at him.

Justin Herbert- The Oregon standout did not live up to preseason Heisman Trophy expectations, but his big arm and 6-6, 237-pound frame intrigues many at the NFL level. But accuracy issues, demeanor and overall consistency has been the biggest knocks on Herbert’s game as he enters the draft field. Still, Herbert could be a first-round pick for a QB-needy team in the draft like the Dolphins.

Jordan Love-The name Patrick Mahomes may be floated around, perhaps recklessly, when discussing Love’s potential, but his arm talent and playmaking ability warrant the comparison to an extent. Love may excel throwing the deep ball but has issues on shorter throws and when pressured by opposing defenses, affecting his consistency. After a standout sophomore season with 32 touchdowns, six interceptions and a 64.0 completion percentage, he followed up with 20 touchdowns, a nation-leading 17 interceptions and completed 61.9 percent of his passes this past season. Still, Love has the upside and potential that could be cultivated.Miami has reportedly met with him at the senior bowl.

Jacob Eason- Transferred from Georgia after he lost the starting job to Jake Fromm in 2017, and needed only one season at Washington before entering the draft.showing off a big arm and ideal quarterback mechanics, although he may be largely unpolished. Maybe another year in college would have benefited Eason’s development, but NFL teams will get a chance to evaluate him at the combine and decide whether he’s a Day 2 or Day 3 draft pick.

Josh Rosen’s Future With The Miami Dolphins https://field2court.com/2019/12/28/josh-rosens-future-with-the-miami-dolphins/ https://field2court.com/2019/12/28/josh-rosens-future-with-the-miami-dolphins/#respond Sun, 29 Dec 2019 02:15:57 +0000 http://josh-rosen-s-future-with-the-miami-dolphins Josh Rosen’s first two NFL seasons fall somewhere between disastrous and inauspicious. As his second campaign winds down with him on the Miami Dolphins bench, the young quarterback with the big arm appears to be at a crossroads.

Rosen’s future as a starting quarterback looks uncertain, and his chances of being the Dolphins’ long-term answer seem to be growing more bleak by the day. However, Rosen has maintained his confidence and composure.

“I’m still only 22 years old. It’s not really [thinking] like the window opens and closes like that,” Rosen said last week. “But there is a sense of sort of understanding timing and opportunity. I’m aware of it, but it’s all for you guys more to write about than it is for me to worry about.”

Rosen believes he will be some team’s franchise quarterback. He doesn’t think the unique path he has taken over his first two NFL seasons has negatively affected that pursuit, but this offseason will loom large for Rosen’s future.

With QB Joe Burrow seemingly headed to Cincinnati with the number 1 pick, connections between the Dolphins and injured Alabama QB Tua Tagovaiola will increase as the draft draws near. That leaves Rosen in limbo for a second straight offseason.
